The Importance of Showing Up in Business

(Even When It’s Hard)

Running a business is a constant balancing act.

There are emails to answer, clients to support, projects to complete, finances to manage, and about a hundred other tasks that demand your attention every day. When you’re juggling multiple plates, it’s only natural that some things fall further down the priority list.

If I’m being completely honest… I’m guilty of this too.

There are weeks sometimes even a month where my focus shifts to another element of the business. Client work takes priority, deadlines pile up, and before I know it, my online presence has taken a back seat.

Then something interesting happens. The enquiries slow down, engagement drops and it becomes very clear just how connected visibility and business growth really are.

Showing up in your business, especially online, isn’t just a “nice to have”. It’s one of the most important things you can do to build trust, maintain momentum, and keep your brand front of mind.

Why Showing Up Matters

Whether you're a creative business owner, service provider, or small business founder, people buy from businesses they trust and trust doesn’t happen overnight.

It’s built slowly through consistency, visibility, and genuine connection.

When you show up regularly, whether that's through social media, emails, blog posts, or networking, you're reminding your audience that you’re present, reliable, and invested in what you do. Even when you're not actively selling, you are still building awareness and that awareness is what eventually leads to enquiries and sales.

Visibility Creates Opportunity

One of the biggest misconceptions in business is that if your work is good enough, people will naturally find you. Unfortunately, that’s rarely how it works. We live in a busy, fast-moving digital world where people are constantly scrolling, discovering new brands, and consuming content.

If your business goes quiet online for long periods of time, it's easy for your audience to simply forget you're there.

Showing up consistently keeps you visible. It reminds your audience what you offer, how you can help them, and why they connected with your business in the first place. Visibility doesn’t always mean posting every single day. It simply means staying present enough that your audience continues to see and recognise your brand.

Consistency Builds Trust

Consistency is one of the most underrated tools in business. When people see you showing up regularly, sharing insights, helping your audience, celebrating wins, or even being honest about the challenges, it builds credibility.

It tells your audience that you're committed to what you do. Trust grows when people see that you're still there, still supporting your clients, and still passionate about your work.

Trust is what turns followers into clients.

Relationships Are Built Through Presence

Business is ultimately about people.

Behind every enquiry, every message, and every sale is a person who connected with something you shared. When you show up online, you're creating opportunities for those connections to happen.

Sometimes it's through a helpful tip, sharing a behind-the-scenes moment or simply responding to a comment or message. These small interactions might seem insignificant at the time, but over weeks and months they build meaningful relationships with your audience and relationships are the foundation of long-term business growth.

The Reality: It’s Not Always Easy

The truth is, showing up consistently can be hard. When you're running a business, client work naturally takes priority. Deadlines have to be met, projects need your focus, and sometimes marketing your own business gets pushed aside.

Add in self-doubt, busy personal lives, and the general pressure of entrepreneurship, and it’s easy to understand why so many business owners disappear from their platforms for a while, but here's the important thing to remember:

You don’t have to show up perfectly. You just have to show up.

Small Steps Still Make a Big Impact

Showing up doesn't mean producing perfect content or posting every day. Sometimes it’s simply:

  • Sharing a quick update

  • Posting something helpful for your audience

  • Celebrating a client success

  • Talking about a challenge you’ve overcome

  • Reminding people what you offer

These small moments of visibility keep your business active in people's minds. Over time, those small actions turn into something powerful, recognition, trust, and ultimately enquiries.

Showing Up During Quiet Seasons

One of the hardest times to stay visible is when business feels quiet. Ironically, this is often when showing up matters the most.

When work slows down, it can be tempting to withdraw and focus inward, but maintaining your presence during these periods ensures that when potential clients are ready to invest, your business is still visible and ready.

Consistency during quiet seasons often leads to growth during busy ones.

A Reminder for Fellow Business Owners

If you’ve had a week (or month) where your business presence has slipped a little, you're not alone. Most business owners experience this at some point.

The important thing is not perfection, it’s returning. Showing up again, reconnecting with your audience and reminding people what you do and how you can help.

Every time you show up, you're strengthening the foundation of your business.

Final Thoughts

Building a business isn’t just about delivering great work although that’s incredibly important.

It’s also about being visible, building relationships, and consistently showing up for the community you're creating around your brand. So if you’ve been quiet for a while, consider this your gentle reminder. Your audience is still there. Your business still matters.

Showing up even imperfectly might be the very thing that leads to your next opportunity and truthfully, this is a reminder for me too.

Like many business owners, I sometimes find myself prioritising other areas of work and letting my own visibility slip but I know from experience that when I return, reconnect and start showing up again, the difference is noticeable.

If you're reading this and thinking you’ve been a little quiet lately, you’re not alone. I’m taking this advice on board myself, showing up, one post, one conversation, and one step at a time.
